Following various threads on this forum I was able to center the blade on my
912D2 - Nitrus Stryker. Cool

Now I want to address another issue. The dual thumb stud. It appears that the stud on the pocket clip side of the blade causes problems for me. It snags on the pocket causing the blade to partially open (sometimes). Also makes it very difficult to withdraw knife from my pocket. It snags and hold onto the top of the pocket with a death grip. I don’t use this side to deploy the blade. I’m a righty. Is it possible to remove that side stud only?

I figured I ask before trying and breaking it.

Well you have a few options.

1) Grind down the thumbstud you don't use, then polish up the nub to look a little nicer than just ground off.

2) Buy a new thumbstud to replace the one that is already on the knife. You have a quite a few options here if you look at any one of a multitude of knife supply websites. The only issue with this is if you buy a single sided stud, most of them require a countersunk hole on the opposite side of the stud to hold the stud on. You may have to send the knife to a knifemaker or machinist to have the thumbstud hole countersunk. I'd wouldn't suggest attempting this yourself since the knife is hardened steel. You risk heating the knife up and causing it to lose it's temper or having the drill walk on the blade and damage the surface.

3) See if Chax can help you.

Can the existing studs be replaced with smaller ones by just removing them? Are they screwed on? I think I read here a 3/16 nut driver. I can live with smaller.

OK, it's a start... Thanks.

Chax....are you out there?

Oh BTW, the quote is

"Good? Bad?....I'm the guy with the gun." FYI

Remember ....Shop smart....Shop S-Mart.

Ok I'm done with AOD. Just don't get me started with ED1 & ED2.

Thanks again. I'll wait for other options. I was hoping to just unscrew the existing ones and installing smaller studs. At least on the one side.

well there is another option, and that would be a tap and die set, IF you can find a threaded thumbstud. (most expensive option)

the cheapest option is to grind down and then polish the offending stud

3/16 driver works perfectly to remove the 912 thumbstud.

I read that info from an old thread. Just so happens it was joe_karp who supplied the advice.

Do I just remove the offending stud or remove both and replace with smaller studs from Benchmade or knifekits? I have no idea how to drill and tap for installation. So that's out.

The fix is easy. Remove the existing studs with a 3/16 driver and replace them with a set of the older and smaller 'standard' thumbstuds which don't catch the pocket edge as much. You could call Benchmade and ask for the studs at 800-800-7427, or maybe one of us has an extra set in their parts drawer.

I will sometimes buy a used Benchmade or two just for those parts. (Thumbstuds, screws, and clips...) Thumbstuds tend to not be the part that gets the wear anyway.

To attach the smaller studs, you usually just need a T-6 to tighten it down...occasionally I need two, one for each side but not often.

Drilling or tapping are not necessary, no worries.
