Slow AFO II

Hey guys,

I finally found another AFO II (second one I have owned) and immediately noticed upon unboxing and firing it for the first time that it opens very slowly. I can actually see the blade move. Has anyone else experienced this? The other one I had was definitely not this slow. Perhaps just a lemon, or does the spring take time to work in, ie is it likely to speed up with use?

It's possible that the pivot screw tightened to a point that it is restricting the speed of opening. I have to play with the tension on mine sometimes to perfect the opening speed, but still lock up tight with no play. With yours being new, I suspect the pivot screw just needs to be backed off 1/16 of a turn or so.

Another possibility is that the spring is weak. Those are cheaply and easily replaced if you're willing to take the knife apart.

Nah not willing to take it apart... the seller said he will take it back and send it in to Benchmade. A schlep and an expense I dont need right now but there you have it... I made a little video to show the difference between the AFO-II and the Spyderco Citadel I have.

As Caron said, nothing to take apart for starters just back off on the pivot screw a bit and a drop of lube might cure your problem in a matter of seconds.

Im going to have to do that with mine as well. Just got mine on Friday and it's not slow but I think it could be faster so I might lube it and loosen it up just a tad.

Btw what do you guys use to lube?
