HI,

I've read on the web that BM will not return otf/auto knives unless you show proof that you are a LEO/service army/etc?

I live in a state that allows you to own/carry/possess otf/auto knives. I have asked them through their contact form and it's been a week now, no reply.

Anyone from BM care to comment on this? I'd rather not send in my 300.00 knife for service and not get it back Smiler

If you are not allowed to have an auto shipped to you directly under the provisions of The Switchblade Act, then, no, Benchmade CANNOT ship the knife back to you. It would be in violation of Federal Law. Does not matter if the auto is legal in your state. We are talking about shipping a knife across state lines, and that is inter-state commerce, which the act restricts.

The best, and safest course for you to take, is to use the dealer locater on the Benchmade site. Find a local dealer that will ship the knife and receive the knife back for you. You may have to pay them for time and trouble, or maybe you buy a few knives from them and they do it for free for a good customer. There is a provision in the law that allows those who are engaged in legal commerce to ship and receive the knives. An authorized dealer is covered by this.

At least that is my understanding.

What a great country we live in... what a crock.

Well at least I got my answer. I'd have to find out if the shop I bought it from will be willing to do this if/when the time comes.

Guess I will no longer be buying BM auto/otf knives, too much risk/hassle envolved with regard to going to the dealer, shipping it out, wondering if the dealer will loose my knife, or charge an arm and a leg to boot.

Would have been great if someone from BM direct would have responded to my inquiry, but I digress.

Wonder since I have a registered business name if I'd be able to do it that way too? Worst case would be they can't ship it back, then why couldn't they ship it back to a FFL or the dealer I purchased from?

Awful lot of work for a little knife with a spring in it.

Did you try calling them? I have always been able to talk to someone with there CS when I call, there is someone that normally picks the phone up after 3-4 rings.. I never send them email's when I have a question becuause ther response time is a bit delayed in responding via email. but they have always responded to them., I agree that yes there are some laws dont make much sense, but it is what it is.. In the future just buy a AXIS lock benchmade like a 710, they flick open just as fast as a auto.. Yes auto's are cool in there own way but if your not LEO or live in a restricted state then its just not worth the hastle of getting in trouble over.. Btw welcome the forums..

you say you wont be buying "BM auto/OTF knives" because of this hassle but all knife companies must follow this, its a federal law, not something BM came up with to hastle its customers. they have excellent customer service, its easy to just call and get your answer though its already posted by Mark.

Hi,

I think what's happening is some customers are not seeing the "contue to submit" link after clicking send.

We had updated the contact us procedure to show relavent FAQ's and info based on the message before actually submitting the inquiry.

I will see about making the "Continue to submit" more noticable.
