Benchmade Auto Sales Policy. What’s Behind It? This morning I was in a local gun shop in Arizona. They are a certified Benchmade dealer. They have an average number of Benchmade’s. A good selection of new 2010 models as well. Half their inventory is autos. They also have a nice selection of Lone Wolf, Boker, and a few other manufacturers. Again, mostly autos. For the first time in many years of shopping there a new sign appears above the knife display. “In accordance with our agreement with Benchmade, we will not sell Benchmade autos to anyone other than Law Enforcement or active military.” In the state of Arizona I can buy, carry and collect auto knives. In this store I can buy auto knives of any other manufacturer, but NOT BENCHMADE. I can buy pistols, rifles, ammo and carry them concealed. Being a responsible law abiding citizen comes with many advantages in the state of ARIZONA. A right WE demand! I’m sure there is a reasonable explanation as to why the ONLY objection and restriction placed on me is Benchmade alone. I’m sure I’m missing something, not really knowing the inside information on this agreement and restriction Benchmade puts on their customers.

I hear ya, Doc. In my state I'm allowed to have and collect autos, but not carry them. Why would anyone turn down a lawful sale? -----=====-----=====-----=====----- KnifeRights Member

Doc F.P.: This dealer is probably complying with Benchmade's requirements regarding sale of "switchblade" knives to persons other than authorized government employees or agencies. The federal switchblade law prohibits the shipment of switchblades across state lines - except to authorized dealers selling only to authorized government and public safety buyers. Benchmade has tended to be a strict stickler on this law, as they have a lot to lose if somebody like that ******* in New York decided to come after them. 581BK-1102 Hybrid, 585-1BK Mini Barrage, 587SBK-1 Mini Warn, Bradley Alias I LE, 581, 525/Bone Collector, 941BLU, 520BK/Bone Collector, 760Ti Krein Regrind, 583SBK-1 Warn Tanto, HK14210, 707-701, 140HS, 551-101 Gold Grip, 941BC, 950BK M4, 220, 30, 42, 32, 53

I understand that's why Emerson, KnifeWorks and others have now got disclaimers on their sites saying they won't do business with prospective buyers in the NYC area. Protecting the business flow is critical, especially right now. 350, 520, 525BK-1101, 530, 580-1102, 580 Proto, 583-1, 585-1, 710-1, 710-2, 710D2, 710HS, 722, 732, 740, 740 Proto, 741, 745, 746, 746-1201, 750, 790, 800, 800HS, 805-1101, 810, 812, 830, 831, 835HS, 840, 845, 890, 905, 907D2, 910, 910SCG, 912D2, 913D2, 12400 Proto, 12410, 14205, 14210, 40022-100. You guys understand this has nothing to do with interstate commerce laws associated with the federal switchblade law. We are talking about interfering with the LEGAL commerce of goods within the state. It would be similar to Smith & Wesson not allowing the sale of pistol magazines that hold more than ten rounds for sale nationwide. I understand the reality of the whole issue. Being extra cautious and losing a number of sales are always better than a bunch of legal issues. Not to mention the endless number of laws on the books at the federal, state and local level. It’s an impossibility to keep up with them and adapting a single, safe and cautious policy will help avoid future problems. Not to mention the government sales Benchmade risks. It’s infuriating that an adult has to put up with such childish nonsense. It’s an interesting topic both legally and at the business level.

Most likely that dealer doesn't fully understand the law - or Benchmade's policy - and prefers to err on the side of caution. Not much you can do but go down the street and give your money to their competition. Steve :-> KnifeRights.org Charter Member #134 - how about you?

Cabela's in Nebraska does the same thing. They will only sell to Military or LE.

I didn’t even know that Cabela’s sold autos. It really doesn’t matter because I won’t deal with them anymore, they did me wrong and p*ssed me off. I have a local dealer that goes out of their way to treat me right, they get all of my knife buying business.
