This is my first post hello all:

Im a police officer and I'm looking into investing in my first REAL knife. The only thing that I have owned is a cheap flea market $20 knife from taiwan that I don't even carry. I don't know much about knifes so I'm hoping you can educate me. I have through some of the posts and have had people state that their knife penetrates phone books and things like that, wow.

So my question is: what is a good knife supposed to be able to do? What's so great about a good quality knife over a $20 cheapo folding knife that cuts fine? If it doesn't cut into a phone book does it mean it isn't good quality? Do they stay sharper longer? Is the steel any different?

Thank You!

why not just get a taser? isn't that what you guys use on helpless citizens since you're too out of shape?

Jedi thats kinda mean to just post something like that to a guy who is new to the forum, just because one cop did something dosnt mean the rest are that way,
by the way Welcome to the forum
and generaly speeking a good knife is going to have much better blade steel along with better heat treat and better edge profile for inproved cutting, along with tighter tolerances in manufacturing, for improved lockup and a nice solid feel

Jedi, I already have a taser, I need a knife now. You know, its unfortunate that you think that way. But for you taking time out of your day to post that ignorant response, Im not even gonna look at the link you provided. By the way, Im actually really in shape and have never used my taser.

Fox thank you that's the type of answer I was looking for.

Never will you need to stab through a phone book I'm sure. But a little more information on what you will be using the knife for might help to narrow down the search. With a $20 cheapo knife you get what you pay for. It breaks, you throw it away and get another. The blade gets dull fast, you go to the grinder and sharpen it. With a BM knife you get a great warranty behind your knife. If it breaks by malfunction when being used correctly BM will fix the knife. Even if you break the knife abusing it BM will fix the knife for a fee. The steels used by BM are some of the best around they will last a lot longer then your usual flee market blade. Even if you dull it you can send it in to BM and they will sharpen the knife for free (you have to send $5 for return shipping though).

I'm sure other guys will chime in and help with things as well. Welcome to the forum.

Jedi,

apology accepted. Sorry for your bad encounter. Some cops out there are just plain jerks and forget people are people and 2 miles over hardly constitutes a ticket, in my opinion anyway.

No biggie, on to my question fellas!
