Looking for a knife for the wife to carry while she walks the dog. Our house is out in the country a bit, and the neighborhood occasionally has stray dogs roaming.

Ideally looking for something assisted, under 6", with the ability to clip to a keyring.

I'd recommend something in the KelTec or Ruger variety. If you anticipate problems with stray dogs, you're better off dispatching the problem at further than arm's reach.

I'll second the Grip if that's what you/she is relegated to.

Agreed...a dog that gets close enough to use a knife is too close already. Get her a handgun and make sure the knows how to use it.

As for something assisted and small, the 585 Mini-Barrage would be a nice knife to have in her walking kit.

If dogs are a real problem (meaning attacking) I,d go with a Gun also.
If the gun is a no , then the bigger the knife the better.
I take a 710

A leaded walking stick would do just fine for dogs.

Since you said you wanted assisted open,I would advise getting a large Auto folder like the 9050 or a 9100 Auto. But seriously if she knows how to handle a gun I would get her a S&W 642 snubnose 38 special. That way she does not have to worry about racking the slide and all she has to do is pull the trigger if she has too..

Joe's suggestion about the 585 is perfect, and also i recommend one of those collapsible batons.I plan on getting one myself, since i like to do lots of walking, and the dog population is getting crazy around here.
