I have a Benchmade Presidio 5000 with a pretty weak spring and want to replace it myself. I was wondering if anyone knew what size spring it takes such as a .375 or a .43. I was thinking of going with a higher torque spring from kitknives (http://www.knifekits.com/vcom/index.php?cPath=60_85_187).

Any thoughts or experience would be greatly appreciated.

It should be the same as Benchmade's other large autos, which I think use the .50 spring.

The coil spring engages in both the right liner and right scale, so be careful when disassembling the knife.

Here's a picture of my 5000 disassembled:

There are a few more pictures in that album, too.

Good luck. Wink

Thank you very much! So I assume putting it back together to just start off with the right scale, right liner, place the spring, then engage & charge the blade. Then place left liner on while making sure the AXIS springs are in place? I know it's a difficult to explain.

Looking at your great pics it doesn't look too hard, though I know holding all pieces in place while putting the liners back in could be tricky.

Assembling right to left did not work for me (although I took pictures with that attempted assembly).

If you put the right scale on the liner, the axis bar needs to be in place, and the right omega spring engaged into the liner. The blade stop needs to be in place before you put in the axis bar as there isn't enough room to put it in after. However, you need to engage the coil spring onto the blade before you put in the blade stop, and the liner and scale have to be connected in order to do that... Roll Eyes

If you can unscrew the left "button" on the axis bar you should be able to assemble right to left and it should work perfectly. I did not try taking apart the axis bar, so I ended up assembling it from the middle out, much like a normal axis folder:

- liners together, with blade stop, spacer, safety in place
- axis bar through liners, engage omega springs
- left scale, put in handle screws to keep things lined up
- slide in blade, with left washer
- lay on left side, drop in blade bushing
- put in coil spring, engage on blade. Spring will not be engaged in the liner.
- line up right scale slightly ahead of engaging the coil spring, lay in place
- try to get pivot barrel through spring, bushing and blade (do not engage in left liner). Barrel with be at a weird angle
- push on pivot barrel to center it while you rotate the right scale towards back of knife. This should engage the spring in the scale and eventually the liner. Keep pushing scale and pivot barrel until barrel slides through left scale
- put in pivot screw, tighten
- line up and tighten handle screws
- loosen pivot screw, test the blade to make sure the spring is still on there
- disassemble and try again until it all fits together... Eeker

Good luck. Smiler

^^^^^^^

Ditto.

I've been screwing with this thing for around an hour. I am not seeing how the right scale is supposed to engage the coil spring.

Is it possible that there has been a change in manufacturing since the above instructions were typed?

RTB SSG - I'm sorry I didn't see your post sooner, I've been away from the forum for a bit.

That is quite possible. My 5000 is from one of the first standard runs they made. Here is a picture showing the scale and the liner and where the spring fits in:

Would it be possible to get some pictures of either your knives (RTB SSG or flashpuppy)? I might be able to help with reassembling it if I can see what it looks like.

Well, your pic looks like mine. I tried for a good while and finally got er to go back together. I ended up taking the leg of my spring and bending it down so it engages the right liner more. After that, I assembled and manually engaged the spring into the right liner, then put the scale on it. I'm on my cell phone right now, but will try to get a pic/better detail tomorrow night.
