The 3500 I owned had the slide safety...and another way to tell the difference is the 3500 is overall much slimmer than the 3550.

True, I've pointed that out before, but if you're only looking at a photo the best way to tell is the screw placement. I think there was an issue with the slide safety on the 3500 being too thin so they went with a little heftier slide on the 3550. It must still be a good seller since it's still available.

Woops..Sort of a large pic. The 3500 in the middle. the safety also has a pivot pin under it unlike the 3550.

Yep good point DB...and I'm sure the additional thickness of the 3550 is to include the redone safety slide mechanism.

That makes the 3500 that much more of a catch.
