So would you think somebody was greedy for charging more than 10 bucks for a vintage uncirculated coin? I know it's an extreme example but it is the same concept. The 42 has become a collectors item, even though they had a recent little production encore. Nothing wrong or unusual about charging over MSRP for an item with collector value. You don't even have to be a free market capitalist to recognize that. I think an uncirculated buffalo nickel is worth more than 5 cents in any country.

What you're saying is true, but there will never be another run of, say, 1922 Morgan dollars, but the 42 could re-enter the scene at any time. The main reason I find it ridiculous to pay that much for a 42 is because there are plenty of other balisongs that are as good or better.

And I don't find it wrong that anyone is willing to charge such exhorbitant prices for them, I'm just appalled that anyone would pay that much for a knife that keeps reappearing, no matter how limited the runs are. I know that Benchmade has claimed they have no plans to bring the 42 back into production, but if they did, nobody could fault them for doing so, except the people who paid all that money for them. I wouldn't be at all surprised if they came back into production sometime in the future.

Like the one person said, if you don't like the price, move along.

There isn't any rhyme or reason for it. Just the supply and demand thing. Capitalism at its finest Big Grin.

And it does show how far the hobby/business of high end knives has come, that's for sure Wink.

And actually, 600 for a Hinderer isn't that bad at all. I'd take that Smiler. I'd do it in a hearbeat, and it wouldn't even make me sick Wink

It is what it is, and no amount of bitchin is gonna change that. Everyone has their price (some higher than others)

I guess value is in the eyes of the beholder... but when compared to other options like maybe a Roton or even something more expensive like a Baliballistic or a 29, the 42 is still a steal.

Even at 280$ you're still getting a 154CM bladed spring latch knife with solid channel flute handles.

Rotons are US made but they have T-latches which I think are cheapy and only stainless handles and I believe they use ATS-34 but I may be wrong, and they run about the same as a 42, maybe a little cheaper.

Idk of any custom maker doing channel flute handles with Ti.

I agree, and you'd be hard pressed to find even a custom with the dynamics of a 42. It's still good value, even at $300. Especially when you consider there isn't any way to order a nicer custom and get it in a reasonable time frame

Once it stops getting produced, it becomes a novelty. That alone is worth something.

Just because the system is against you doesn't make it flawed.
